Background of the Study
First aid plays a critical role in providing immediate care to individuals with injuries or health emergencies, reducing mortality, and preventing complications before medical professionals arrive (Musa & Jibril, 2024). In emergency medical situations, the timely application of first aid can make the difference between life and death, and nurses are often at the forefront of delivering such care in healthcare settings (Abubakar & Bello, 2023). In response to the growing demand for trained healthcare professionals, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has implemented nurse-led first aid training programs aimed at enhancing the skills and preparedness of healthcare workers to handle emergency situations effectively.
The nurse-led first aid training programs are designed to provide nurses and other healthcare workers with the necessary knowledge and skills to respond efficiently in critical situations such as cardiac arrests, bleeding, burns, and fractures. Studies have shown that nurse-led training programs significantly improve health outcomes by equipping healthcare professionals with the ability to deliver timely interventions and reduce the impact of medical emergencies (Aminu & Tanimu, 2023). However, the effectiveness of these programs at UMTH, especially in terms of the nurses' performance and patient outcomes, has yet to be thoroughly evaluated.
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led first aid training programs at UMTH, specifically focusing on how these programs influence nurses' competency in emergency situations and the overall quality of patient care.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of first aid in managing emergencies, many healthcare workers in Nigeria, particularly nurses, lack the necessary training to deliver optimal first aid in time-sensitive situations (Oluwole & Ahmed, 2024). At UMTH, while nurse-led first aid training programs have been introduced, there is a lack of comprehensive assessment regarding their effectiveness in enhancing nurses' skills and improving patient care. This gap in knowledge affects the potential impact of the training programs, particularly in saving lives during emergencies. Therefore, an appraisal of the effectiveness of these nurse-led programs is essential to understanding their contribution to better emergency management and improving patient outcomes.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led first aid training programs in improving nurses' emergency care skills at UMTH.
2. To assess the impact of first aid training on the quality of care provided by nurses during emergency situations at UMTH.
3. To recommend improvements in nurse-led first aid training programs at UMTH for better outcomes.
Research Questions
1. How effective are nurse-led first aid training programs in improving emergency care skills among nurses at UMTH?
2. What impact does nurse-led first aid training have on the quality of emergency care provided at UMTH?
3. What changes can be made to improve nurse-led first aid training programs at UMTH?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurse-led first aid training programs significantly improve the emergency care skills of nurses at UMTH.
2. Nurses who participate in first aid training programs provide higher-quality emergency care compared to those who do not.
3. The implementation of regular refresher courses and hands-on training improves the effectiveness of nurse-led first aid programs at UMTH.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses involved in emergency care at UMTH. It will not include other healthcare workers who may also be trained in first aid. The study is limited by the availability of participants, as some nurses may have limited exposure to emergency care situations. Additionally, the study will rely on self-reported data from nurses, which could be subject to bias.
Definitions of Terms
